In Meriam Waters
More Information
Despite European efforts to eliminate the Meriam people's customary ownership of "plots of sea" and distant fishing grounds, their sea claims remain inseparably bound to their land claims.

And so, in their case to the High Court of Australia on the twentieth of May 1982, the Meriam made reference to the sea in two sections of their claim.

In the minds of the plaintiffs, land and sea property could not be separated.
