The Murray Islanders have a long history of formal government schooling. 
 
In 1886, seven years after the annexation of the islands, the local authority promised the Meriam a school, if they built a classroom, and a teacher's residence.
 
Ten years later, the fourth grade class was doing compound arithmetic and an English missionary found the children's progress astonishing.
