'The Queensland Government tried to block my return to the island, I've got the telegrams telling me I'm not permitted back to my own island where I was born.

'I believed the islands were mine. No one could stop me going there. In 1977 I hired a boat and went across there with my family. I expected to be arrested by the Queensland police but when my people saw me no one complained. That's what led to this case Mabo and Others against Queensland and the Commonwealth.'
