In 1992, the year of his death, Eddie Mabo, along with his fellow Islander plaintiffs, was awarded the Human Rights Medal, by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

In January 1993 the Australian newspaper declared Mabo 'Australian of the Year', and The Age newspaper in Melbourne described him as one of Australia's twenty most influential figures.
