Mabo home
...early work...
When Bob Miles was transferred to Yorke Island in the late 1940s, he asked Maiga Mabo if Koiki, who was then a young teenager, could go with him and work as a teacher's aide. For twelve months, Mabo assisted Miles, teaching basic English to prep. grade students on Yorke Island. It was his first paid employment.

In the early 1950s a malaria epidemic swept through the Torres Straits and young Eddie accompanied a Queensland doctor, who came to investigate the cause. They travelled throughout the Straits, and down to the mainland Aboriginal missions at Lockhart River, Bamaga and Kowanyama.
