'It wasn't long after that, that the old man died. That really affected him a lot, really bad. To know that he couldn't go across to see his father and for the children to see their grandfather, it really hurt him badly. And I think all that built up inside of him, all that anger. He'd swear and carry on, "Nothing's going to keep me away, I'm an islander and that's it."'
